We’re now seeing VR used in fields from gaming to healthcare to architecture, and its applications are only getting more varied. But what does the future of VR look like?

What Is Virtual Reality and How Did It Start?
If you haven't heard of virtual reality (VR) before, you might be wondering, what is it and where did it come from?
At its core, virtual reality is a computer-generated simulated environment designed to look, feel and sound like the real world. You enter this simulated world through the use of specialized headgear, such as a VR headset. Through the use of sensors built into the headset and movement controllers, users are able to interact with and explore the virtual environment.
VR technology has been around in some form since the 1950s when Morton Heilig invented the Sensorama machine. Built in 1957, this machine introduced an experience that combined audio-visual elements to create a multi-sensory environment for viewers. But it wasn't until 2016 when VR started becoming more commonplace when headsets like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive were released.
Since then, VR technology has continued to expand rapidly with nearly unlimited potential.

From virtual classrooms to virtual art galleries, virtual reality (VR) is already playing a role in our lives—and it's only getting bigger. As more industries adopt VR technology, the possibilities continue to grow.
It's no wonder that industry analysts expect the market for VR products and applications to reach $44 billion by 2023. With expected year-over-year growth projected at 43%, this means the future of VR looks nothing short of vibrant and promising.
Future Advancements in Virtual Reality Hardware
It's hard to predict where virtual reality technology is heading, but here are some of the advancements we can expect in the next few years when it comes to hardware:
Improved Display Technology
The most obvious advancement that needs to happen is in display technology. Current headsets are limited by resolution and field of view, but as 5G networks and more powerful mobile processors become available, we can expect to see resolution improve drastically and more immersive fields of view.
Faster Processing Power
We can also expect headsets to come with faster processing power. This will allow users to take advantage of a wider range of content—increasing graphics capabilities, better graphics rendering, improved audio quality and more.
Wireless headsets are already available on the market and will likely become the norm as companies develop lighter designs and faster data transfer speeds. This would make virtual reality a much more accessible and convenient experience for users.
Another exciting development is third-party hardware such as haptic feedback systems that can provide tactile sensations from the environment in which you’re immersed. There's already some interesting stuff out there that developers are beginning to incorporate into their VR experiences such as controllers that offer sophisticated six degrees of freedom (6DoF) movement tracking, environmental sensors that detect temperature changes — the possibilities are endless.
With all these advancements on the horizon, it won’t be long before virtual reality becomes an integral part of our lives!

So what's next for virtual reality software and content? It's an exciting time to be involved in the industry, that's for sure. Here are a few things on the horizon:
Spatial Computing: Virtual reality is set to take on the physical world with technologies like augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR). The goal is to bring digital objects and features into our physical environment, so they'll interact seamlessly with our surroundings. Think tracking data points, displaying holographic interfaces, or even controlling robots or drones with motion-sensing controllers.
Fully Immersive Experiences: Developers are getting creative by blending real-world and virtual realities together to create fully immersive experiences — for instance, you could tour a simulated Mars base and explore its geography in VR, then come out of the simulation and physically traverse a real Martian landscape on Earth. This kind of experience would combine sensory input from the real world with digital elements from VR — it'll be like nothing we've ever seen before!
AI-powered Interactions: AI will make it possible for virtual agents or digital humans to interact with users in realistic ways — as if they were having conversations with real people! This could open up whole new possibilities for gaming, education, training simulations and much more.
