ChatGPT is an example of a generative AI model. Generative AI is a subset of artificial intelligence and machine learning in which a model creates new content based on patterns in previously seen data. In the case of ChatGPT, this generated content is text, but other models exist for image, audio, and even video generation.

Standard chatbots are typically designed to respond to a limited number of questions with a predetermined response. ChatGPT is far more generalizable because it interprets the question or task and determines the best response based on its understanding of language. As a result, ChatGPT has a broad range of potential applications.
